Five seconds to change your life... sounds like a gimmick doesn't it? But it's not. It's science. Its a powerful metacognition technique! Use the rule to stick to your goals, to wake up your inner genius, to push yourself, to become more productive, to step outside your comfort zone, to self monitor emotions, to battle addictions,

You are one decision away from a completely different life. Act with courage and stop the brain from getting involved. Thinking can sometimes make everything worse. Sometimes the more you think about something the more afraid you become. You can talk yourself out of things really fast. Goal related impulses, urges, and instincts are there to guide you.

The second you have an instinct to act on a goal you must 5-4-3-2-1 and physically move or your brain will stop you. It's amazing how you do what needs to be done and you don't think or have a chance to feel.

Using the Rule strengthens your belief that you DO have the ability to control your own fate because you are proving it to yourself one push at a time! THE RULE MAKES THINGS HAPPEN, it doesn't make things easy.

Why the Rule Works

Simply put the Rule is a researched backed metacognition tool that creates immediate lasting behaviour change. Metacognition is any technique that allows you to beat your brain in order to accomplish your greater goals.

When ever you feel an instinct fire up to act on a goal or commitment, or moment you hesitate to do something and you know you should do... USE THE RULE... Simply start counting backwards to yourself: 5-4-3-2-1. The counting helps you focus on your goal or commitment and distract you from worries, thoughts, and fears in your mind. AS SOON AS YOU REACH 1...MOVE

Counting distracts you from worries, it focus your attention on what you need to do, it prompts you to act,m and it interrupts the habits of hesitating, overthinking, and holding yourself back.

The Rule helps you change your DEFAULT settings and your habits one Five-second decision at a time. Those small decisions add up to major changes in who you are, what you feel, and how you live.

When to use the Rule

1. You can use it to change behaviour- Use the Rule to push yourself to create new habits, gain self-control and pull yourself away from destructive habits. The Rule stops your brain from killing your urge to act.

2. You can use it to act with everyday courage- Use the rule to discover the courage you need to do things that are new, scary, or uncertain. To quiet self-doubt and build confidence as you push yourself. The Rule beats the brains operating system to help you win battles against that resistance you feel in the moment.

3. You can use it to control your mind- Use the Rule to stop negative thoughts and endless worries. You can break the habit of anxiety and fear. Take control of your mind and focus on the things that bing you joy. The Rule helps you change your DEFAULT mental settings.

HOW TO USE THE RULE: Try a wake up challenge- Jumpstart your day. Set your alarm 30 minutes earlier than usual, and the moment it goes off, count back 5-4-3-2-1 push yourself out of bed. If you can change your morning routine, you can change anything. You need to act deliberately. ACTIVATION ENERGY- is the minimum amount of energy required to begin a chemical reaction. Chemists found that Initial energy is higher then the energy needed to keep things going. The initial energy needed to get out bed is higher then the energy needed to keep going. Psychology Csikszentmihalyi applied this concept to human behaviour, blaming activation energy as one of the reasons why making change is so hard. The 5 Second rule gives you that push you need to keep going.

Courage changes behaviour

If you have courage to start, you have courage to succeed- What are you waiting for? Often we think we are protecting ourselves from judgement, rejection, or upsetting someone, but when you make excuses you talk yourself into waiting. 5 Seconds of courage changes everything. When you 5-4-3-2-1 and DONE you push yourself forward and open yourself up to opportunity. HOLD ON, LET ME OVERTHINK ABOUT IT!

Either you run your day or the day runs you- HAVE THE COURAGE TO RUN YOUR DAY: Life is about the choices we make. You have a choice how to act. For example if you goal is to get healthier, what you need to do is pick a plan, and then 5-4-3-2-1-GO. Have the courage to CHOOSE to do it. Exercise and health comes down to one simple rule, you don't have to feel like it... you just have to do it.

Increase Productivity- FOCUS is the key to productivity. The ability to manage distractions so you can focus moment to moment and the skill of focusing on what;s truly important to you in the big picture. TIPS for productivity: Own your morning, make a daily routine, plan a quitting time. Use the 5 Second Rule to plan to help with distraction from the Plan.

End Procrastination- 5 Second Rule is an incredible weapon to fight procrastination. Productive procrastination allow for essential time for divergence or mental breaks. Destructive procrastination is entirely different and has negative consequences. 5-4-3-2-1-GO and push past what you are putting off. Just get started and you will be taking back your locus of control and empowering yourself.

Courage changes your mind

Using the 5 Second Rule to change your mind: Stop Worrying- Catch yourself when you drift off to worry and then gain mental control using the Rule. Change your mind- when you mind takes you somewhere sad, dark, doubtful, or negative you don't have to go with it. What I'm grateful for in this moment 5-4-3-2-1-GRATEFUL. When anxious- say you're excited.


The 5 Second Rule helps us push past our comfort zone, build momentum, and build courage.

There is greatness in everyone of us and the 5 Second rule offers us the potential to open doors and opportunities for a great life.
